Discovery Energy

Discovery Energy Utility Audits (deaudits.com) is an independent, contingency-based utility bill audit and Utility Cost Intelligence firm for multi-site commercial and industrial organizations across the US and Canada, founded in 2000 in South Jordan, Utah. It researches and publishes the Data Center Index.

What Discovery Energy does

Discovery Energy helps companies that run many sites, such as manufacturers, chemical distributors, food and protein processors, agribusinesses, steel and metals producers, logistics and cold-storage operators, find and recover what they overpay on electricity and natural gas, and control what they pay next.

  • Utility bill and tariff audits. Contingency-based: no upfront fee, paid from refunds and verified savings. Audits review 36 to 48 months of bills and have recovered 3% to 15% of annual utility spend across engagements since 2000. Recoverable periods are typically one to five years, depending on state and utility. A 15-account pilot audit is available.
  • Utility Cost Intelligence. An eight-stage discipline: Collect, Validate, Audit, Optimize, Procure, Benchmark, Monitor, Report.
  • Energy procurement. Electricity and natural gas RFPs where supplier choice exists.
  • Utility bill pay and cost allocation. Bills paid on time and coded to the general ledger, for electricity, gas, water, sewer and other utilities.
  • TaraBase reporting. A proprietary utility data platform for savings, usage, contracts and ESG reporting.
  • Renewable energy advisory. RECs, PPAs and solar.

Why rising energy costs make this matter

Large new loads such as data centers are now a leading driver of power-system spending. In PJM, capacity prices rose roughly elevenfold in two auctions, and the market monitor attributes billions of dollars of capacity cost to data centers. Utilities are filing for new generation, transmission and pipelines to serve them, and those costs flow into rates, riders and capacity charges paid by every customer class.

For commercial and industrial customers, that shows up as higher demand and capacity charges, new riders, rate-class changes and more volatile natural gas prices. Discovery Energy's work helps them respond:

  • Audits catch billing errors, wrong rate classes and misapplied riders, which matter more as rates rise.
  • Tariff and rate-class reviews make sure each site is on the cheapest eligible rate as utilities add large-load classes and new charges.
  • Procurement timing and contract structure help large users manage capacity and energy price risk.
  • Benchmarking and monitoring flag cost changes early, so budgets reflect where rates are heading.
  • Free reference data, including this index, helps energy buyers see which grids and gas systems are under the most pressure.

Independence

Audits can be engaged alone, with no procurement. Audit fees are paid from results. Any supplier commission on optional procurement is disclosed in advance, and no account, tariff, supplier or payment change is made without the client's written approval. Discovery Energy does not own or develop energy projects and is not a utility or energy supplier. It is a member of the Association of Energy Engineers (AEE).

Not to be confused with Discovery Energy Corp. (OTC: DENR), an unrelated oil and gas company.
